Arachnoid cysts are abnormal collections of spinal fluid in the brain. The cause of these cysts is unknown, they can be congenital (the child is born with it) or present later in life (rarely). They can present as an incidental finding on MRI, and only need occasional follow-up. Sometimes they cause symptoms of increased pressure in the brain or seizures. If so, they should be evaluated and treated by one of our Neurosurgeons.

There are several options for treating these cysts: making a window in the cyst (craniotomy) and/or placing a shunt into the cyst itself. We also offer the latest technology of endoscopic (using a small camera) fenestration of the cyst. Our neurosurgery team will offer you the latest technological advances to treat the cyst, taking into consideration the child’s symptoms and medical condition.

Examples of arachnoid cysts are shown below (white star located in the cyst).
