The highly trained and skilled pediatric surgeons at Arnold Palmer Hospital specialize in general and specialty surgical care children providing a service that meets the special surgical needs of children.
Pediatric surgeons perform surgery on children from the newborns through the teenage years.
How are pediatric surgeons trained and certified?
Pediatric surgeons must have graduated from an accredited medical school and have completed several years of graduate surgical education in an accredited general surgery residency program. This includes additional years of education in a fellowship program in pediatric surgery.
This specialized education requires a board certification in general surgery. After passing a written and oral exam in their sub-specialty they are granted a certificate in the sub-specialty of pediatric surgery. The physician must have this certificate renewed periodically to make certain the physician’s competency and knowledge is up to date in the advances of surgical care.
What is the focus of pediatric surgery?
surgeons utilize their expertise to provide surgical care for all
problems or conditions affecting children that require surgical
intervention. Our surgeons work with teams of other clinicians to focus on the child as a whole, and work to make surgery and hospitalization a positive and less stressful experience for all.
What difference can a pediatric surgeon make?
surgeons specialize in the surgical care of children. They are surgeons
who, by training, are oriented toward working with children and
understanding their special needs. In addition, they work with various
specialists who are also oriented towards the continued growth and development of the child. Pediatric
surgeons are able to save whole lifetimes, and have the opportunity to
