What is a pediatric surgeon?

The highly trained and skilled pediatric surgeons at Arnold Palmer Hospital specialize in general and specialty surgical care children providing a service that meets the special surgical needs of children.

Pediatric surgeons perform surgery on children from the newborns through the teenage years.

How are pediatric surgeons trained and certified?

Pediatric surgeons must have graduated from an accredited medical school and have completed several years of graduate surgical education in an accredited general surgery residency program. This includes additional years of education in a fellowship program in pediatric surgery.

This specialized education requires a board certification in general surgery. After passing a written and oral exam in their sub-specialty they are granted a certificate in the sub-specialty of pediatric surgery. The physician must have this certificate renewed periodically to make certain the physician’s competency and knowledge is up to date in the advances of surgical care.

What is the focus of pediatric surgery?

Pediatric surgeons utilize their expertise to provide surgical care for all problems or conditions affecting children that require surgical intervention. Our surgeons work with teams of other clinicians to focus on the child as a whole, and work to make surgery and hospitalization a positive and less stressful experience for all.
