Clerkship Programs

Clerkships are four weeks in length with clinical learning experiences that are structured to allow for institutional academic elective credit to be assigned if desired.

Orlando Health is institutionally affiliated with Florida State University College of Medicine, University of Florida College of Medicine, University of South Florida College of Medicine.

Various clerkships are offered in the areas of:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • General Surgery
  • Internal Medicine
  • Neurology
  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Pathology
  • Pediatrics

What is the application process?

US medical students who have access to VSLO (Visiting Student Learning Opportunities) must complete the medical student application on VSLO, as provided by the AAMC. 

US medical students who do not have access to VSLO may submit a paper application. Please reach out to the GME office via email at [email protected] to request the application. Completed applications (Part I and Part II) may be mailed to Graduate Medical Education Administration, 1335 Sligh Blvd 5th Floor, Orlando, FL 32806, emailed to [email protected] or faxed to (321) 843-1791.

Please note that only students enrolled at U.S. LCME accredited institutions and accredited American Osteopathic Association institutions are able to apply via VSLO. Students enrolled at LCME accredited Canadian institutions or international medical schools may find application materials as noted below.

Orlando Health will charge an application/processing fee of $50.00 per approved rotation.

The application must include a copy of the CV, transcripts, school’s medical malpractice insurance ($1,000,000 occurrence / $3,000,000 annual aggregate) and a copy of current personal health insurance. Incomplete applications will be marked as ineligible and will not be reviewed until the application is complete.

Foreign medical students must complete the same requirements as the US medical students. In addition, they must also include the CIE 701/702 form with their application. If your school holds the CIE 702 Form you are required to have Step 1 and Step 2 completed before the start of the rotation. If you fail to meet all requirements set by the CIE 701/702 Form you will not be able to start the rotation. This form is required by the State Commission for Independent Education for all foreign medical schools. Should your application be approved, final approval is contingent upon the State’s review and approval of this form. This form can be obtained by your school’s coordinator via the Florida Department of Education website.

When can I apply?

We will begin accepting applications throughout 2022 – 2023 Academic Year and applications for academic year 2023 – 2024 after February 27, 2023.

What is the review timeframe?

The review process timeframe will vary throughout the academic year. However, students should allow a minimum of 4-6 weeks for processing. You will receive notification via VSLO if you have been approved or not. For paper applications you will be notified via email.

How many rotations can I complete at Orlando Health?

If approved, you can complete a total of two rotations within the Orlando Health system.

What are the rotation schedules?

Elective rotations are scheduled for a duration of four weeks. The following are the dates to be used when submitting your application. Requests outside of these dates will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the appropriate program based upon availability and need.

Diversity Scholarship Opportunity

The Graduate Medical Education Diversity Council is offering scholarships in the amount of $750 for visiting M4 students who are Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM), which is defined by the AAMC as “racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population." Please reach out to the program you are applying for a rotation, to request information on how to apply for this scholarship.

Clinical Clerkship Application

Fourth-year medical students wishing to apply for a clerkship position and who do not have access to VSLO will need to contact the GME office via email to request a paper application.
