Pulmonary and Respiratory Diseases
Your lungs move air in and out of your body, adding oxygen and removing carbon dioxide from your blood, helping your body's systems function properly. Some of these diseases make breathing very difficult or painful. A pulmonologist is a physician specially trained to diagnose and treat diseases of the lungs.
Pulmonary diseases involve lung diseases or other lung problems such as:
- Respiratory distress
- Pulmonary edema
The Respiratory Care Department at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital is available to diagnose lung problems as well as help treat them. Many tests can be performed that will find out the cause of breathing problems or monitor lung function. The department is staffed with respiratory therapists trained specifically to perform diagnostic procedures and treatments for the lungs. Some of the procedures include:
- Arterial blood gas analysis
- Ventilator management
- Intubation and extubation
- Patient and family education
- Airway monitoring and clearance
- Oxygen administration
- Nebulizer therapy
- Hemodynamic monitoring
Diagnostic services include complete pulmonary function testing (PFTs), peak flow meters, oxygen saturation measurement, overnight oximetry monitoring and arterial blood gas analysis. Dr. P. Phillips Hospital also offers a unique service, high altitude simulation testing (HAST), which is used to assess a patient's need for oxygen when flying in an airplane.
Consult your physician if you have questions about pulmonary diseases or respiratory care.
