In the continued fight against prostate cancer, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center Orlando established a clinic to screen and evaluate men at high risk of harboring this deadly disease. Early detection is crucial in treating prostate cancer. If detected early, then there are numerous successful treatment options including active surveillance, brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, cryosurgery (total or focal) and radical prostatectomy (open or robotic).
Symptoms
There are often no symptoms of prostate cancer in its earliest stages.
Risk Factor
This clinic is geared towards men who have had a prostate biopsy for elevated serum PSA or abnormal digital rectal examination and the biopsy did not detect cancer. Despite the negative results, these patients are at significant risk of developing prostate cancer over the ensuing years.
Screening
Cancer screenings are medical test that are performed when a person has no symptoms. Screening will consist of:
-
Digital Rectal Exam: The doctor inserts a lubricated, gloved finger into the rectum to feel if the prostate gland is enlarged. -
Total and Free Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: This is a simple blood test. -
PCA3 urinary assay: This is a simple urine test. -
Transrectal ultrasound (optional): This is a simple ultrasound of the prostate assessing the size of the prostate and any anatomical abnormalities of the prostate. -
Counseling: A man should understand the risks and benefits of prostate cancer screening. Talk to your doctor to see if prostate cancer screening is right for you. Reducing Your Risk
