The Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Center at MD Anderson – Orlando are experts in a wide range of cosmetic and reconstructive procedures and also offers nonsurgical procedures within the center.
We specialize in the following plastic and reconstructive procedures:
Microsurgery
A complex procedure that involves sewing together tiny nerves, tendons, or blood vessels under a microscope in order for tissue to live in its new location. The surgeon uses a thread so thin that a microscope is needed as an aid.
Microsurgery makes it possible to reattach limbs, create eye lids as well as free tissue transplants. This intricate procedure allows a surgeon to be able to use tissue as thin as paper to correct deformities caused by cancer, burns or trauma.
Microsurgery can be used all over the body. It is used to create or restore functionality and appearance.
DIEP (deep inferior epigastic perforators) Flap
DIEP is a state-of-the-art procedure that uses excess tissue from a patient’s abdomen to sculpt a new, natural breast. This complex, yet superior procedure, is made possible through microsurgery. Benefits include:
- Less pain
- Shorter recovery
- Uses patient’s own tissue
- Preserves abdominal muscles
- Softer, more natural breasts without implants
- Covered by insurance
- Lower risk of abdominal complications with decreased risk of hernia
- No mammograms required after reconstruction
- The possibility of one-stage reconstruction
Free Flap
A free flap is a piece of tissue that is completely removed from its donor site along with an artery and a vein and will be connected to an artery and a vein at the recipient site.
The terms free flap and free tissue transfer are synonymous labels used to describe the movement of tissue from one site on the body to another. "Free" implies that the tissue, along with its blood supply, is detached from the original location ("donor site") and then transferred to another location ("recipient site").
Various types of tissue may be transferred as a free flap including skin and fat, muscle, nerve, bone, or any combination of these. For all free flaps, the blood supply is reconstituted using microsurgery to reconnect the artery (blood into the flap) and vein (allows blood to flow out of the flap).
This is in contrast to a “pedicled” flap in which tissue is left attached to the donor site and simply transposed to a new location keeping the “pedicle” intact as a conduit to supply the tissue with blood.
Local Flap
A local flap is performed if an area or defect is large. The defect is removed, followed by tissue rearrangement that is adjacent to the wound. The flap is used to create minimal scarring and to rearrange the tension of the closure. The area will then gradually return to its natural shape as the flap takes shape and heals. It is important to note that some may experience possible complications from a local flat, which might include scarring, excessive bleeding and blood clotting.
Pedicle Flap
Involves the same movement of muscle or other tissues, but differ from free flaps in that the pedicle (blood supply) to the flap are not cut. Instead the pedicle is dissected so that the flap can be moved directly or through a tunnel created under the skin to the defect area.
A pedicle flap is tissue that is moved on a vascular pedicle (an artery and a vein that will be connected to an artery and a vein at the recipient site) and is sutured into place at the recipient site.
Regarded as leaders in their field, our plastic and reconstruction surgeons are all board-certified, highly skilled and trusted surgeons.
