Sterile Processing Teams Surprised by Recognition

L-R: Reginald Bailey (Winnie Palmer Hosptial/ACC), Karen Nauss (Boston, MA), Alumita Tuikaba (ORMC), Ayanna Jameson (ORMC), Andrea Harris (ORMC), Freddy Gonzalez (Dr. P. Phillips Hospital), Jo Woods (Boston Medical Center)

Orlando Health’s sterile processing teams were recognized at the annual chapter seminar of the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM), held last month.

The team was surprised to be called to the front of the room and greeted by Jo Wood and Karen Nauss, who had traveled from Boston to honor them for their role in the Pulse tragedy.

The two women had experienced a similar situation in the sterile processing department of their hospital when the Boston bombing occurred. With so many casualties coming in, their team knew what it was like to work quickly to keep instruments ready and available for surgeries.

They told Orlando Health’s team that they understood what they had experienced since they had stood in their shoes three years earlier.

The team was presented with the Healthcare Service Excellence Award for 2016 on behalf of the Massachusetts Chapter for Central Sterile Professionals.
