Welcome to the Orlando Health Internal Medicine Residency. Our training program is the cornerstone of the Medical Education Department at Orlando Health and our residency offers a rewarding and enriching environment where our residents receive individualized learning opportunities and maximize their full potential as clinicians, educators, and healthcare leaders.
Our faculty is committed to ensuring that all members of our house staff fulfill these goals, while recognizing that each individual resident has a somewhat different background, needs and career objectives. Whether in the hospital or outpatient center, our purpose is to prepare graduates for the challenges of patient care in today's environment. We provide a rigorous academic foundation combined with patient diversity, sub-specialty exposure, research opportunities, and complete ancillary support.
Our program is progressive in outlook and continuously introducing progressive educational ideas and reforms to complement our teaching system. Our faculty and housestaff also work together as a team to attain the above goals. We consider ourselves a family, supporting and sustaining one another, to maintain and advance a solid educational system.

About the Program
With over 40 years of experience, the Internal Medicine Department at Orlando Health has been training gifted internists for general primary care and future subspecialty training. The department offers a three-year ACGME-accredited residency-training program designed to provide the necessary experience for board certification, and a successful practice in internal medicine, and/or future subspecialty/fellowship training.
We offer 12 categorical and 2 preliminary PGY-1 positions each year.The full-time faculty is composed of academic internists dedicated to resident education and mentoring.
As a not-for-profit, tertiary care teaching facility and the only Level I Trauma Center in Central Florida, Orlando Health services a diverse patient population and functions as a referral center for surrounding communities. Training is conducted in state-of-the-art facilities equipped with the latest technology and 24-hour ancillary services.

Our affiliations allow for clinical researchers and subspecialists from outside institutions to lecture and participate in our residency program. In addition to this, medical students from these universities rotate at our institution during their third and fourth years. This exchange enhances the exposure and educational opportunities for our housestaff and fosters an environment of continued medical education.
Our residents are highly sought after for their clinical expertise and receive competitive job offers and fellowships upon completion of the program.
Our curriculum is tailored to individual career goals and elective rotations are selected to accommodate special interest in primary care, hospitalist medicine, or subspecialty training. Our residents receive one-on-one faculty mentoring throughout their training.

** Four weeks of paid vacation are taken: one week in three of the non-ward months and one week at either Christmas or New Year's.
Morning Report: Held every day at 11AM, morning report is the highlight of the day! The relaxed environment allows for group discussion of clinical cases with a multidisciplinary approach; residents and attendings from various specialties and subspecialties are present to provide their input. Patient history, physical exam findings, diagnostic imaging, laboratory data, and procedures are analyzed and reviewed with a special focus on differential diagnosis. This session is the inspiration for Madruga and Marvel's Medical Black Book: Guide to Differential Diagnosis, Mnemonics, and Clinical Pearls.
Noon Conferences: Held daily following Morning Report our residents receive lectures and/or a case discussion led by our attendings and subspecialty faculty. Special features include:
- Emergency Medicine Lecture Series: These lectures are provided by selected Emergency Medicine and subspecialty faculty members during the first month of each academic year and are designed to prepare the resident to recognize and manage all major medical emergencies.
- Morbidity and Mortality Conference: Selected cases with clinical/pathological findings are reviewed and discussed amongst our residents to improve patient outcomes.
- Journal Club: Our residents are trained to critically review clinical papers from major medical journals at these monthly sessions.
- EKG Conference: Each month residents receive instruction on EKG interpretation by Dr. Roland Filart, voted attending of the year by current residents.
- Medical Jeopardy Competition: Each month, the residents compete with one another for knowledge of general and subspecialty medicine. This conference is a fun and exciting way to review material for the Internal Medicine Boards.
Grand Rounds: Weekly, an in-house or visiting professor presents a comprehensive review of special topics in medicine.
Simulation Training: In scheduled sessions throughout the year, our residents receive training and instruction on ACLS/code simulation, evaluation and care of the critically ill patient, and procedures which include intubation, placement of central lines, and lumbar punctures.

Applicants must have received an M.D. degree from an approved school of medicine within 3 years of applying to the residency program.
International Medical Graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate. These applicants must pass the Clinical Skills Assessment exam on the first attempt by the rank order list deadline, and also pass the USMLE Step 1 and 2 on the first attempt. Some U.S. clinical experience is required.
All applications for first-year positions are accepted only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) along with the following documentation:

- USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores

- Two letters of recommendation

Invitations for interviews are extended following review of each completed application. Interviews are conducted from November to the end of January.During their visit, candidates are invited to dinner the night before their interview and have the opportunity to interact with current residents. On the day of the interview, candidates will receive an overview of the program, tour our facilities, and attend morning report. They will also meet with our program director and interview with two faculty members. Lunch is provided and hosted by one of our chief residents as well as our residents at various levels of training.
