Welcome from the program director.

Welcome to the Orlando Health Orthopedic Residency Website. As you will see below, our program offers a well-balanced education in Orthopedic Surgery, with a strong emphasis on "hands on" operative experience. Our faculty consists of a hybrid of full-time academic surgeons and private practitioners, all of whom have dedicated a significant portion of their time and effort to resident education. Unlike many University-based programs, our high volume case-loads offer a rewarding operative experience at a much more junior level in training. All of our rotations are consistent, for example, every resident does the same sports rotation, the same spine rotation, the same joint rotation, etc. This consistency has allowed us to distill faculty into those that truly want to teach and are willing to allow the resident to participate heavily in the surgical procedure. Also, the resident will learn the nuances of running both an employed academic practice and a private practice from the various faculty.

Physician's Assistants are employed to unload some of the floor and clinic work to allow the residents to spend the majority of their time in the operating room. Two full time research coordinators are available to facilitate academic interests. Orlando offers entertainment and cultural amenities that few cities on the globe can match. Real estate is affordable and readily available.

I hope you find our website informative, and I look forward to answering your questions in person. I am sure you will find our residency competitive, uniquely strong in its operative experience and stable faculty, and, located in one of the most magical cities on earth.

Sincerely,

George J. Haidukewych, MD

General Information & Program Strengths

As a member of the Orthopedic Surgical Residency Program, you will be part of a team that is dedicated to meeting the challenges of one of the fastest growing areas in the community.

We offer a wide variety of residency programs and maintain teaching affiliations in many specialty areas. The fully accredited residency programs include general surgery, pediatrics, emergency medicine, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology and pathology. Our programs have been created to enhance relations and communications within the medical center for your benefit. As an orthopedic resident, you will discover that these programs help promote the Orlando Health philosophy that our people are the most important part of our organization.

ORMC offers a diverse mix of orthopedic surgical patients with no predominance of one particular disease. Full ancillary services (e.g., IVs, phlebotomy, transportation, etc.) are available on a 24-hour basis.

Residents and attending staff conduct regularly scheduled daily teaching conferences with active participation. In addition, our research program encourages participation by residents and includes presentation of papers at local, national, and occasional international meetings.

Orthopedic residents are treated as post-doctorate students with emphasis on didactic curriculum as well as a learning-by-doing approach to clinical orthopedic surgery. Extensive hands-on experience is possible because of our high volume and the commitment of our staff to the teaching of orthopedic surgery.

Program Strengths

The hands-on experience is extensive. By the third year, the resident will have been involved with the full range of orthopedic surgery. The orthopedic surgery service is busy, but not overwhelming. At all times, the resident's academic needs are given top priority and emphasis.

Academic Achievement

Our orthopedic residents have consistently achieved high scores on the National In-Training Examination, with an average above the 90th percentile. Over the past 10 years, all of our graduating residents have successfully passed their orthopedic board examinations. In addition, a number of residents have presented their clinical and basic science research studies at national and international meetings as well as having results published in national journals. After completing their residency, all of our graduates for the past several years have been accepted in highly competitive fellowships encompassing sports medicine, spine and foot subspecialties.
