Travelers

For travelers, the threat of disease worldwide, although real, is often different from what many expect. Epidemics, outbreaks and life threatening diseases do occur; however, the actual risk varies according to destination, duration of stay and nature of travel and the overall health status of the traveler. Health Service for Travelers at Orlando Health provides accurate and reliable information specific to each traveler’s personal itinerary. We have experience in caring for a variety of travelers in all age groups.

After you see your travel agent, see us!

Knowing how to protect yourself against health risks while traveling is not so simple. With a significant difference between home and destination environment, the need for pre-travel counseling and immunization is essential. Most people think of immunizations as something needed when we are children, but not all immunizations are effective for a lifetime. Health Service for Travelers at Orlando Health offers an array of services to ensure our travelers remain healthy and safe:

  • Individual pre-travel assessment to determine healthcare needs
  • Current information on disease risks, political and social environments, crime and road conditions, specific to country of travel
  • Education on travel health issues, including food and water precautions and insect protection measures
  • Preventive vaccines and medications
  • Our staff has experience with many different types of travelers, including:
    • Individuals and Tour Groups
    • Corporate/Business Travelers
    • Missionary Groups
    • Church Mission Trips
    • College, University and School (individuals & groups)
    • International Programs
    • Military & Government Employees
    • Sporting Teams, Media, Travel Agent and Medical Professionals
    • Aviation Companies
    • Dive Groups
    • International Visitors
    • Medical Missions

  • Kids travel, too!

Children traveling with their parents need immunizations as well. The routine immunizations scheduled for children in the US do not provide adequate protection for many areas of the world. We will collaborate with your pediatrician as needed to assure that your children are as vaccine-protected as appropriate for their age and planned destination.

Students

Due to close contacts with others, many colleges, camps and summer programs require certain immunizations such as Hepatitis A or B and Meningitis. Health Service for Travelers at Orlando Health can provide immunizations for children and teens to meet these requirements in a pleasant, caring environment.

Young adults may find that physical exams are necessary for entrance to colleges, schools and other specialized training programs. These can be scheduled conveniently for both teens and adults with our nurse practitioner.

Personal Protection

Health Service for Travelers provides flu and pneumonia shots for people of all ages. Flu shots are specially formulated each year and should be updated annually. The pneumonia vaccine is given once after age 65, but may be given earlier for those at high risk due to chronic poor health.

Everyone in the United States should have a tetanus/diphtheria vaccine every 7-10 years. Because of our unique services, we always have this vaccine on hand even when there is a national shortage. We now encourage all adults to receive the new Tdap (Adacel) vaccine once as an adult to prevent whooping cough.

All adults are should consider the Hepatitis A and B vaccines unless medically contraindicated due to possibility of exposure to these diseases in our own country.

The new HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is available in our clinic. The FDA has approved the administration of this vaccine to girls and women ages 9-26 years of age.

Adults 60 years of age and older may be eligible to receive the shingles vaccine, Zostavax, if you are interested, please call to find out if this is a vaccine you should consider.

Work Requirements

Employers are now seeking immunizations to optimize the continued health of their staff members. Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and tetanus/diphtheria (Td) are among the immunizations often requested. On site clinics are available for larger groups.

Many businesses contract with us to provide flu shots for their employees annually as both a benefit to the employees and the employer.

Injury

If you step on a nail or endure some other injury that warrants a Tetanus/Diphtheria (Td) or the new Tdap vaccine, we can help. Even during shortages, the vaccination is usually available in our office.

We also offer post-exposure vaccination and counseling for Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Rabies.
