Avascular necrosis, which is caused by a loss of blood supply to your bones — often from trauma — is most common in the knees, hips, shoulders, hands and feet. Our goal is to reduce your pain, improve your use of the injured area and prevent further damage.
Your treatment may begin with anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling and exercises to increase the mobility and range of motion of your joints. Most people with avascular necrosis will need surgery at some point. Depending on the location and extent of your pain, we may remove or reshape parts of your bone, transplant healthy bone from another part of your body, or replace your joint.
