Bursitis is an inflammation or irritation of the fluid-filled sacs called bursae that act as cushions between your bones, tendons and ligaments. In most cases, bursitis can be treated with rest, physical therapy and medication. However, in very rare cases of infection, our doctors may recommend surgery.
We may recommend medication, including antibiotics, to reduce the swelling that impedes your motion. We also may recommend physical therapy or exercises to strengthen your muscles or injections of steroidal drugs to minimize your swelling. In some rare instances, we may consider surgery to drain infected bursae or to remove bone spurs impeding your movement.
