Bowel diversion surgery allows stool to safely leave the body when, because of disease or injury, a portion of your large intestine is removed or needs time to heal. The opening is called an ostomy, and the part of your intestine outside your body is the stoma.

An ostomy formed from the small intestine, or ileum, is called an ileostomy. An ostomy formed from the large intestine, or colon, is called a colostomy. Some ostomies are permanent; others are temporary ways to divert waste into a bag until you heal. Our specialists will help you adjust to this change and guide you through the experience.
