Robotic Gynecologic Cancer Surgery

The doctors at Orlando Health — including Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies and the Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center — have advanced training and experience in robotic-assisted surgery for the treatment of uterine, cervical and ovarian cancer. Our Gynecologic Cancer Center is a recognized epicenter for da Vinci® robotic surgery with doctors coming from across the country to receive training from our skilled surgeons.  The benefits of robotic-assisted procedures include smaller incisions, less likelihood of complications such as bleeding and infection, less scarring, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and easier and quicker recovery.*

Robotic Hysterectomy for Gynecologic Cancer

A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of a woman's uterus. In a simple hysterectomy, both the uterus and cervix are removed. A simple hysterectomy plus bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is when both ovaries and fallopian tubes are also removed. A radical hysterectomy includes complete removal of the uterus, cervix and upper vagina.

During a robotic hysterectomy, surgeons have an enhanced 3D view of the body and improved maneuverability through the da Vinci system’s robotic arms. Smaller incisions are made, resulting in less bleeding, less scarring and a faster recovery. Recovery from a robotic hysterectomy generally takes approximately 2 weeks compared to an open hysterectomy which can take up to 6 weeks for recovery.

Robotic Pelvic and Para-aortic Lymph Node Dissection

A lymph node dissection, (also referred to as a lymphadenectomy) may be recommended for the presence of endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer or cervical cancer. This procedure is performed to clear any cancerous lymph nodes from a specified area of the body. Recovery from this robotic procedure generally takes 1 week if no hysterectomy is performed at the same time.

Robotic Fertility-Sparing Radical Trachelectomy

A radical trachelectomy is a fertility-sparing surgical approach for women with small localized cervical cancer. This procedure removes the cervix and surrounding tissue while maintaining the top portion of the uterus. Recovery from the robotic procedure generally takes 2 weeks compared to 4–6 weeks for conventional open surgery.

Robotic Parametrectomy

If cervical cancer is found after a simple hysterectomy it may be necessary to perform an additional procedure called a parametrectomy to remove cancer from the surrounding tissues of the cervix. Recovery from the robotic procedure generally takes 1–2 weeks compared to 4–6 weeks for conventional open surgery.

Robotic Tumor Reductive Surgery

For women with later-stage ovarian cancer, the goal of this surgery is to remove as much tumor as is safely possible. This may include removing tissue from nearby organs, such as the spleen, gallbladder, stomach, bladder or colon. Recovery from the robotic procedure generally takes 3–4 weeks compared to 6–8 weeks for conventional open surgery.    

Robotic Omentectomy

An omentectomy is a surgical procedure designed to remove the omentum, which is a thin fold of abdominal tissue that encases the stomach, large intestine and other abdominal organs. 

An omentectomy may be recommended for an ovarian cancer patient if cancerous cells have invaded the omentum. The procedure may also be performed as a preventive measure to reduce the risk of cancer spreading from the ovaries to the stomach and other abdominal organs.

Robotic Bowel Resection

Bowel resection, also called partial colectomy, removes a diseased or damaged part of the colon or rectum. Bowel resection can be done for many diseases that affect the colon, such as colorectal cancer, diverticulitis or Crohn's disease.

Robot-assisted laparoscopy for bowel resection usually involves three to six very small incisions instead of one large one. Recovery from the robotic procedure generally takes 2–3 weeks compared to 4–6 weeks for conventional open surgery.

Robotic Appendectomy

An appendectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, most often performed as an emergency operation. An appendectomy may be performed to relieve pelvic pain or an ovarian malignancy. A robotic appendectomy involves several small incisions versus one long incision in an open appendectomy. Recovery from the robotic procedure generally takes 3–5 days compared to 2–3 weeks for conventional open surgery. 

Robotic Splenectomy

A splenectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the spleen. Patients who are candidates for robotic surgery normally have a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery than in an open surgery. The 3D, high-resolution view that the da Vinci robotic system provides surgeons enables a more precise dissection of the splenic vessels even in difficult situations.
