Our doctors may perform a sigmoidoscopy to examine your sigmoid colon – roughly the last two feet of your large intestine – by inserting a flexible tube with a camera at its end that allows us to see inside.

Overview

Our doctors will begin by checking your rectum for blockage. Next, they will insert a sigmoidoscope through the anus and move it gently into your colon. Air is inserted into the colon to enlarge the area and help the doctor view the area better. Our doctors may take tissue samples with a tiny biopsy tool inserted through the scope. We may use heat to remove polyps and take photos of the inside of your colon.
