Overview

Hallux rigidus is painful stiffness in your big toe, often the result of wear-and-tear or an injury that leads to arthritis.

A bone spur may develop on the top of the big toe bone, making it difficult for you to walk. We may recommend surgery if your pain persists.

Resting your foot may ease your symptoms. Pain and anti-inflammation medications also can reduce pain. We may suggest applying ice packs and taking baths that alternate between cold and hot water.

Our physical therapists also can work with you on exercises and stretches to increase your toe’s range of motion. In some cases, we may surgically remove bone spurs or cartilage to reduce or eliminate pressure.
