Tommy John surgery — also known as ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction — involves grafting tissue to replace your damaged ligament. Baseball pitchers and others who make repetitive over-the-head motions typically suffer these Injuries. The surgery is named after Tommy John, a Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher who was the first to receive the treatment in 1974.
Our orthopedic surgeons will make incisions on the inner part of your elbow, where the damaged ligament will be removed, and drill holes in your bones to attach the replacement ligament. A portion of tendon, usually from your forearm or leg, will be grafted onto your damaged ligament. We will secure the tissue with fixation devices, such as a medical staple or pin.
