New Breast Imaging Center Brings Greater Access to Healthcare for West Orange

Orlando Health - Health Central Hospital is pleased to announce the opening of a new Breast Imaging Center to give residents of West Orange County additional access to comprehensive breast care.

Located inside Orlando Health - Health Central, the new Breast Imaging Center has been renovated with the most advanced technology in detecting breast cancer. It will offer patients 3D mammograms, breast ultrasounds, DEXA scans and image guided breast biopsies in five treatment rooms. Breast MRIs will be available in early 2023.

"With the incidence of breast cancer increasing in our growing community, we wanted to create a space that would offer our patients greater access and convenience," said Margo Shoup, MD, MBA, president, Orlando Health Cancer Institute. "The addition of the Breast Imaging Center, combined with our expert breast care team at the Cancer Institute in Ocoee, will allow our patients to complete all aspects of cutting edge breast care - screenings, biopsies, surgeries, and cancer treatment – within easy reach on the Orlando Health - Health Central campus."

"We always want our patients' screening mammograms to come back negative but based on statistics, we know that some of them will be diagnosed with breast cancer," said Philip Koovakada, senior vice president, Orlando Health South Central region, and president, Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital. "Dealing with a cancer diagnosis is difficult enough – so we want to make sure people can easily make appointments and receive all of their care in the same place, near their homes."

Patients and guests in the new space will be able to draw inspiration from a mural covering the interior walls of the Breast Imaging Center. Orlando Health commissioned local artist Rudy Drapiza from the Winter Garden Art Association to paint the mural, including daisies symbolizing the Daisy Award, which recognizes the extraordinary efforts of nurses throughout Orlando Health.

The Breast Imaging Center will open its doors to patients on Oct. 17, as Breast Cancer Awareness Month is underway.
