Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology (IR) is a medical specialty that uses advanced imaging technology—such as X‑ray, CT scans, MRI and ultrasound—to help doctors diagnose and treat many conditions with minimally invasive procedures. Using small tools like thin tubes called catheters and tiny needles, our specialists can treat medical problems without large incisions or traditional surgery. Because these procedures are less invasive, patients often experience less pain, little to no scarring, shorter hospital stays and a quicker recovery. There is also a lower risk of infection and fewer complications compared to surgery. Many IR procedures are done with mild sedation instead of general anesthesia. Today, many conditions that once required surgery can be treated safely and effectively through interventional radiology. These procedures are used to care for many areas of the body, including:

  • Abdomen (intestines, kidneys, liver, stomach)

  • Bones and Joints (muscles, joints, spine)

  • Chest (lungs, respiratory system)

  • Genitourinary (uterus, kidneys)

  • Vascular (arteries, veins, hemodialysis access)

  • Image‑guided biopsies

  • Central venous access, including chest and arm ports

  • Long‑term fluid drainage using PleurX catheters and Denver shunts

  • Treatment for blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis

  • Tumor‑targeted therapies

  • Feeding tube placement

  • Inferior vena cava (IVC) filter placement and removal

  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty to treat spinal fractures

  • Liver cancer treatments, including chemoembolization (TACE) and radioembolization (Y‑90)

  • Kidney drainage and stent placement

  • Pelvic vein embolization

  • Tumor ablation using heat or cold
