Scholarly Activity includes discovery, integration, application, and education. At our residency residents pursue Scholarly Activity in 3 domains: Research, Quality Improvement, and Teaching.


Residents are encouraged to pursue research, present their findings at national and local conferences, and publish manuscripts. Recent resident research projects have been presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics National Conference, Childhood Arthritis and Rheumatology Research Alliance, Society of Critical Care Medicine Annual Congress, North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition Annual Meeting, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Conference, American Thoracic Society Conference, Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FCAAP) Conference, Florida Perinatal Quality Collaborative, and the Orlando Health Quality Retreat, among others.

Quality Improvement

Residents undergo a Quality Improvement Curriculum during their residency, which incorporates Institute of Healthcare Improvement modules, didactic lectures, focused mentoring, and a Quality Improvement Project. Residents present their project formally at the Orlando Health Quality Retreat during their PL-3 year.

Recent resident-led QI projects include:

  • Decreasing refusal of the Hepatitis B immunization in the immediate newborn period
  • Implementation of a multidisciplinary huddle to promote earlier discharges / transfers in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit
  • Early antimicrobial de-escalation and implementation of antimicrobial stewardship in pediatric febrile neutropenia
  • Implementation of the CRAFFT screening test for adolescent substance abuse in the Orlando Health Primary Care Pediatrics clinic
  • Increasing human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination completion rates in a pediatric resident clinic through reminder phone calls
  • Improving caregiver knowledge of asthma upon hospital discharge using a visual aid with asthma education
  • Fostering exclusive breastfeeding through “All About Baby” prenatal classes
  • Improving the asthma action plan to increase completion rates in clinic
  • Increasing influenza vaccination rates in children in a pediatric resident clinic by providing a handout about influenza to caregivers
  • Increasing rate of HPV vaccination in a low performing outpatient pediatric office using an evidence-based patient-friendly handout
  • Increasing resident confidence with addressing adolescent depression and suicide
  • Improving efficiency at the Orlando Health Primary Care Pediatrics Clinic with the introduction of age-specific well-child guides
  • Creation of a NICU continuity clinic improves flow in a resident pediatric practice
  • Oral glucose gel treats transient hypoglycemia in newborns and decreases separation of the infant-mother dyad
  • Improving breastfeeding rates via a 3-step motivational interview
  • Improving poverty screening for low-income families at a pediatrics clinic
  • Impact of a pediatric-trained transport team on patient care and hospital unit placement
  • Implementation and utility of the Transportation Risk Assessment in Pediatrics (TRAP) score at Arnold Palmer Hospital
  • Improving timely administration of scheduled albuterol treatments for patients admitted with asthma exacerbations from the pediatric emergency department
  • Improving efficiency in NICU primary care follow-up clinic through the use of an outline to guide history taking and important elements of anticipatory guidance

  • Improving incentive spirometry use in children with sickle cell disease admitted to the Arnold Palmer Hospital hematology unit
  • Increasing Vitamin D supplementation compliance in formula and breastfed newborns with education and visual aids
  • Implementation of a high flow nasal cannula protocol improves overall weaning rates and clinical outcomes in 6-24 month old patients


During the required Medical Education Teaching Rotation, a PL3 resident actively teaches junior residents and medical students while learning and perfecting skills as a medical educator. The rotation consists of structured teaching sessions performed by the resident, supervision and evaluation of medical students, self-study, didactic sessions, literature review and oversight of patient management.
