Dr. Gary Allen is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at the Orlando Health Heart and Vascular Institute who specializes in treating various disorders of the heart and blood vessels. He also serves as the institute's medical director of cardiac surgery.
Dr. Allen is specially trained in minimally invasive techniques for performing aortic valve, mitral valve and lung surgery. His areas of expertise include:
- Beating heart (off pump) coronary artery bypass graft surgery
- Repair of ascending aortic aneurysm
- Surgical correction for atrial fibrillation
- Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine
- Re-operative and complex cardiac surgery
He has cared for patients in Central Florida for almost 20 years and believes it’s important to build a deep trust relationship that is founded on transparent, easy-to-understand language and compassion.
Dr. Allen’s Training
He received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York, and a Master of Medical Management at Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School of Information Systems and Public Policy in Pittsburgh.
Dr. Allen earned his medical degree at Albany Medical College in New York and completed two general surgery residencies at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston. He performed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City and a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in mechanical circulatory support at the University of Utah School of Biomedical Engineering Jarvik Heart Lab.

A recipient of the Ralph D. Alley Prize for Cardiothoracic Surgery and other honors, Dr. Allen is considered a leader in his field. He has presented his research findings at national conferences, and his work has appeared in peer-reviewed publications.
Dr. Allen is board-certified in cardiothoracic surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. His professional memberships include the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery (ISMICS), American College of Surgeons, American Heart Association, Lake County Medical Society and the Florida Society of Thoracic Surgery.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and friends, reading nonfiction books, road biking and traveling.
