Endocrinology is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions controlled by the endocrine system, which is made of glands and organs that release hormones working to regulate a number of vital functions of the body. These glands include the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenals, pancreas, testes, and ovaries. Hormones released from these organs travel through the bloodstream to specific target tissues throughout the body, promoting the balance of normal bodily functions, such as blood sugar control, normal growth and development, regulation of metabolism and heart rate, blood pressure and digestion, sexual development, reproduction and mood. A deficiency or excess of any one hormone can impact the entire body. If normal homeostasis fails to correct an imbalance, interventions to replace or eliminate the abnormal endocrine gland or the hormone it produces, becomes necessary. Endocrinologists are specially-trained to bring the balance of these hormone back in line to bring health back to those who are suffering with diabetes mellitus, insulin resistance, thyroid disorders, osteoporosis, infertility, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, obesity, and more.
