Javier Esteban Varela, MD, is a board-certified general surgeon with Orlando Health Medical Group Surgery. He specializes in minimally invasive, laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Dr. Varela is a diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and has fellowship training in advanced minimally invasive surgery.
His extensive education includes a medical degree with honors from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia; master’s degree in public health from the University of Miami; and master’s degree in business administration from Washington University in St. Louis.
Dr. Varela also has completed a general surgery residency at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia; general surgery residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago; and advanced minimally invasive/ bariatric surgery fellowship at University of California, Irvine.
His research includes serving as the principal Investigator at the National Institutes of Health and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). His work has appeared in numerous peerreviewed publications, and Dr. Varela is fluent in both English and Spanish.
