Dr. Joseph Gallagher is a board-certified colorectal surgeon with the Orlando Health Colon and Rectal Institute. He serves as director of the Colon and Rectal Residency Program at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Orlando/Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center and specializes in advanced robotic as well as laparoscopic colon surgery.
Dr. Gallagher treats patients with:
- Benign or malignant disease
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Ulcerative colitis
- Irritable bowel disease
- Fecal incontinence
He also uses sphincter-sparing techniques and Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery to avoid surgical incisions when possible. Dr. Gallagher started performing robotic colon surgery in 2010 and has since performed hundreds of the procedures. He dedicates himself to medical education by interviewing students for medical school, residencies and fellowships.
Dr. Gallagher’s Training
Dr. Gallagher earned his undergraduate degree with a double major in biomedical and electrical engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his medical degree and a master's degree in physiology from Chicago Medical School. Dr. Gallagher was elected into Alpha Omega Alpha, a national medical honor society recognizing excellence in scholarship, research and leadership.
He completed a residency in general surgery at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and his fellowship in colon and rectal surgery was performed at Orlando Health ORMC.
About Dr. Gallagher
Dr. Gallagher is board certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery. His research has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals. His volunteer work includes caring for patients at Shepherd’s Hope Health Center.
Outside of work, he is an avid runner, qualifying and running in the Boston Marathon. He also enjoys hiking, kayaking and spending time with his family.
