Paul Massimiano, MD, is a board-certified thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon with the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute. He has provided patients comprehensive cardiac surgical care for more than 30 years and is known as an expert in minimally invasive heart surgery, in particular minimally invasive mitral valve surgery, which he helped develop. In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Massimiano also serves as the Institute's medical director of cardiac surgery.

Experienced Cardiac and Vascular Care

Narrow or blocked arteries, known as coronary artery disease, are a common condition and require experienced cardiac and vascular care from a board-certified surgeon like Dr. Massimiano. Patients with advanced coronary artery disease may experience a severe cardiac event such as intense chest pain, heart attack or stroke and require emergency attention.

Whether it is a scheduled or emergency procedure, Dr. Massimiano provides patients the most current surgical treatments available. For many patients, minimally invasive procedures, including angioplasty and stents, are appropriate, while others may require bypass surgery or another more invasive intervention.

Dr. Massimiano’s Training

Dr. Massimiano earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine followed by internships in general surgery at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, and Navy Regional Medical Center in the Philippines. He returned to Bethesda for residencies in general and vascular surgery, serving as chief resident.

He then completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at Yale New-Haven Hospital in Connecticut, an affiliate of Yale University School of Medicine, and an advanced valve fellowship at St. Vincent Heart Institute in Portland, Oregon.

About Dr. Massimiano

In addition to certification by the American Board of Surgery, American Board of Thoracic Surgery, and National Board of Medical Examiners, Dr. Massimiano is active in many professional organizations. These include the American Medical Association, Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society for Minimally Invasive Surgery, and American College of Healthcare Executives.

His work has appeared in peer-reviewed medical journals, three book chapters, and at national and international scientific meetings. He also has received many awards during his career, including the Navy Achievement Award and Navy Meritorious Service Medal.

Dr. Massimiano is a recent graduate of the Harvard Medical School Surgical Leadership Program, where he was selected as class graduation speaker.
