Set the Pace Program Rewards Nurses for Specialty Certification
Orlando Health’s Set the Pace program has been updated and now offers eligible
nurses a $250 award for achieving certification! This means that participants in
the program are financially rewarded for successful completion of national
certification with a $250 lump sum award in addition to reimbursement
of the initial exam fee. Certified nurses who sponsor, coach and mentor peer
nurses are also eligible for the $250 lump sum award.
“The Set the Pace
program helps certifying nurses gain prestige from meeting nationally recognized
standards in a particular specialty and gives mentors the opportunity to
encourage their fellow team members,” says Joy Parchment, PhD, RN, NE-BC,
director, Nursing Strategy Implementation & Magnet® Program. “It’s a program
that’s mutually beneficial for all nursing team members who
participate.”
As part of the program, the mentor and applicant both sign
a contract, approved by the nurse manager, who verifies that the certification
is on an approved list of established certifying organizations. Certifications
must be obtained within one year of the agreement being signed, and the
mentor/mentee must meet a minimum of three times during the mentoring period.
“We’ve also streamlined the mentoring process by developing a journal
tool to document progress and mentor/mentee meeting times until the nurse’s
certification exam is successfully completed,” tells Joy. “Research demonstrates
that there is a positive link between certification and improved patient
outcomes. Certification is important to nursing practice, and I encourage all
nurses to pursue specialty certification.”
