Our cardiologists may recommend an implantable cardioverter defibrillator if you have sustained ventricular tachycardia, or rapid heartbeat, or conditions such as a previous heart attack or an inherited heart defect.
The cardioverter defibrillator is a small device that our surgeons place into your chest or abdomen. Wires with sensors on the end connect to your heart and monitor its rhythm. If the device detects arrhythmia, it uses low-energy pulses to restore normal heart rhythm. If irregular heartbeat continues, the device will switch to a high-energy pulse lasting a fraction of a second to defibrillate your heart.
