Our specialists may recommend lengthening a limb when one of your legs is two or more inches shorter than the other, or if your ankle is improperly formed, among other circumstances. Treatment will depend on your particular situation and your desired level of mobility.
To lengthen your limbs, our surgeons will rely on your body’s ability to create new bone and to develop tissues that surround your bones, such as ligaments, blood vessels, and nerves. We will perform a procedure called an osteotomy in which we cut the bone in your shorter limb and secure the limb in frame. Pins in the frame will be adjusted four times a day to produce growth of up to six inches over time.
