Wear and tear or an injury can cause metatarsophalangeal joint arthritis, a progressive degenerative condition that reduces joint motion in your toe. We may recommend surgery if your condition does not respond to conservative treatment.
Our physical therapists can work with you on exercises to increase your toe’s range of motion. In some cases, we may surgically remove bone spurs or a portion of your foot bone so your toe has more space to bend. In other cases, we may remove damaged cartilage and fix the joint with pins, screws or a plate. This procedure is the most effective way to eliminate your pain.
