How we treat the ligament that helps stabilize your knee will depend on the severity of your injury, and your activity level and age. Our sports medicine and orthopedics team can usually treat your PCL injury without surgery, instead recommending treatment that may include medication and physical therapy.
We may begin your treatment with ice, massage, electrical stimulation and ultrasound to ease your pain and swelling, and may also prescribe anti-inflammatories, a brace to stabilize your joint and crutches to keep your weight off your knee. Gradually, we may add exercises to strengthen your quadriceps muscles. We rarely recommend surgery, unless you have also damaged other parts of your knee.
