Request an Appointment with an Orlando Health Physician

Treatment of your ulcerative colitis depends on the severity of the disease and your response to medications and a modified diet. If the disease is not held in check, we may recommend surgery.

One surgical option involves removing your entire colon and rectum to create an ileostomy, or opening in the abdomen through which solid waste is emptied into an external pouch. A similar procedure creates an internal connection from the small bowel to the anal area, avoiding an ileostomy.
