About the Program

Clinical Schedule

The clinical schedule for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine program was developed with the Fellow’s careers in mind. Most rotations are divided into 1-2 week rotations to as an attempt to mimic working life after fellowship. To provide the best opportunity to complete scholarly work in a 2 year fellowship, 1-2 week blocks of research/scholarly activity time is distributed throughout both years of fellowship.

Program Highlights/Rotation Highlights:

  1. Core Inpatient rotations: These are split evenly between our faculty only team and our resident education teams to provide experience as an independent provider and experience both working with and educating residents and learners.
  2. Surgery Rotation: Time with our pediatric surgeons learning about initial management and co-management of common surgical issues, experience with feeding tube placement and re-placement, and to develop a deeper understanding of the workflow for our surgical colleagues to develop strong working relationships with the surgical team.
  3. Labor & Delivery: A rotation designed to prepare fellows for independent practice at community hospitals where delivery room attendance and providing care for critically ill neonates is a routine part of the job. Fellows should feel prepared to manage critically ill neonates and stabilize them for transport to a tertiary care center at the end of this rotation.
  4. Sedation Rotation: This rotation will develop pediatric hospitalists who are experienced and certified to provide high quality procedural sedation services after graduation.
  5. Interdisciplinary Rotation: This unique rotation was developed to provide our fellows with experience in the day to day and hour to hour workflow of the ancillary staff that keeps the hospital moving. This includes time with nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and social workers learning about how they do their jobs so that our fellows will be excellent collaborators and create strong working relationships with the ancillary staff in their careers.
  6. Complex Care and Transitions Clinic: Fellows will rotate for one half day a week with the complex care clinic. Most complex care clinics in the country are managed by either a pediatric hospitalist, pediatric critical care physician, or a IM-Pediatrics trained physician. This will also provide excellent education on transitions of care between the hospitalized patient and the outpatient provider with a focus on patients with complex healthcare needs.
