Before your treatment, you will meet with your provider for a consultation. This will include going over your medical history. It is important that you are open and honest during this meeting. There are very few risks with this procedure, but complications can arise from certain medications, allergies, and skin and neurological conditions.
The treatment will typically happen during an office visit and take 15 minutes or less. It is unlikely a topical anesthetic will be necessary. The combination of a very thin needle and the experience of the injector will minimize any discomfort. Application of ice immediate post-treatment can be utilized for any discomfort noted.
After the botulinum toxin is injected, you will be able to resume your regular daily activities, though your doctor may suggest avoiding strenuous activity or exercise for the rest of the day. Among the typical side effects are mild redness, bruising and swelling around the injection site, and mild headache. Initial effects are noted within 48 hours. It may take up to 10-14 days to notice the final results of the treatment.
The effects of the treatment can vary based on the product being used, the area treated and the patient. Results typically last for three to six months. When they start to wear off, your provider can repeat the treatment.
