Welcome to the Orlando Health Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship

Banner image

The Orlando Health Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine (PCCM) fellowship is a three-year program in which the fellows spend about 24-30 clinical months, mostly at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), and train in general and interventional pulmonology, as well as critical care medicine in state-of-the-art ICUs. This fellowship is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Because Orlando Health has been training physicians for over 50 years, medical education is a core value of the organization. Orlando Health and its flagship academic hospital, Orlando Health ORMC, is an ideal location for pursuing graduate medical education. The system has residency programs in most medical subspecialties, including internal medicine, general surgery, OB-GYN, emergency

medicine, pathology and pediatrics, and fellowships in most medical and surgical subspecialties. Orlando Health ORMC is the only Level I Trauma Center in Central Florida and is nationally and internationally acclaimed for its superb handling of the Pulse Nightclub shooting tragedy. It is a tertiary referral center receiving air and ground transport patients from hospitals within a 150-mile radius.

The Orlando Health PCCM Fellowship Program is designed to prepare physicians for a successful and exemplary career in PCCM.

The program offers:

  • In-depth clinical exposure to patients with a diverse and extensive spectrum of pulmonary and critical care illnesses as well as advanced training in cardiac, oncologic and sleep disorders.
  • Experienced, expert and always-available faculty who are deeply committed to GME.
  • Extensive hands-on education and abundant practice opportunity in general bronchoscopy, advanced diagnostic procedures like robotic navigational bronchoscopy and EBUS, and other interventional pulmonary procedures.
  • Adequate time, guidance, mentorship and encouragement to learn and conduct basic, clinical, outcome and quality research. Multiple acclaimed, original research presentations by all the current fellows in chest, SCCM and ATS on a recurrent annual basis are a testament to the research/scholarly productivity and opportunities available.
  • State-of-the-art methods of teaching, including traditional didactics, multidisciplinary educational activities, nationally and globally acclaimed online educational activities, SIM sessions, and web-based on-demand sessions are available, as well as access to a wide array of online resources.
  • Elective and selective rotations in a wide variety of subspecialty pulmonary programs, such as cystic fibrosis clinic, pulmonary hypertension clinic, interstitial lung disease clinic, thoracic oncology multidisciplinary program, sleep clinic, TB and refugee health clinic, lung transplant clinic, and nodule clinic are all available to rotate through.
  • Elaborate online curriculum in healthcare communication skills, quality matrix with careful focus on diversity, and healthcare disparity education.
  • Well-designed pulmonary electives including lung transplantation at Advent Health, pulmonary hypertension/ECMO, interstitial lung diseases, thoracic oncology, thoracic surgery, radiology and interventional radiology, as well as research and epidemiology.
  • A well-rounded educational, clinical and research experience due to the large patient population at Orlando Health ORMC; the high acuity of illness; state-of-the-art diagnostic, therapeutic and research facilities; and the well-established and integrated in-system ambulatory care setup.
