Visitor's Guide to Surgery
PreOp and PACU Visitation
- Visitation in the preop and outpatient recovery area is limited to one person.
- Up to two visitors per patient will be allowed in the surgical waiting area. Additional loved ones may wait in the lobby or cafeteria.
- No one under the age of 14 is permitted in preop or post op.
- If visitation interferes with patient care, visitors will need to return to the waiting area.
- No food, drink, phone calls, audio/video recording or photography are allowed on either unit. Please put your phones on silent in the clinical areas.
- All minors must be accompanied by an adult and cannot be left unattended in the waiting room.
- For safety and privacy reasons, visitors are not permitted to accompany the patient in the exam/procedure rooms.
During Surgery
- If the patient is going to be discharged on the same day as surgery, we ask the ride to remain in the hospital.
- If you need to leave the hospital for any reason, leave your contact number for Guest Services personnel.
- The length of time of surgery provided by the surgeon/specialist is an estimate, the actual surgery time may vary.
- After the procedure is over, someone from the surgical team will contact you to let you know how surgery went. They will look for you in the waiting room or call you on your phone. If you miss seeing the doctor or miss the phone call, it may be difficult for them to talk with you again. Please stay where they can find you and keep your phone nearby.
- Designate one person as the point of contact for communication from healthcare providers.
Recovery Room
- Visitation will be at the discretion of the nurse and is not guaranteed. We do this to protect the privacy and safety of everyone.
- We cannot provide a specific time frame for recovery. The type of surgery, anesthesia used, and the body's response to medications determines the length of time needed to recover from anesthesia.
- You will be notified of the status of your loved one and what the next steps will be.
- Be patient as assigning inpatient rooms post-surgery can take time.
Additional Items
- You must be escorted in and out of the preop and post op areas. In order to protect patient privacy, you should stay within the bay assigned to the patient for the duration of your visit.
- Due to unforeseen circumstances and medical emergencies, it is possible that surgeries may be delayed or even canceled. We will do our best to keep you informed and up to date on any changes.
- For assistance outside of regular business hours, please contact the PACU at (407) 296-1285.
