Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease characterized by recurring seizures caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. While epilepsy seizures may be related to a brain injury, infection, stroke or family tendency, in many cases the cause is unknown. Epilepsy is a spectrum condition with a broad range of seizure types and control methods. Affecting all ages, many people with epilepsy also experience other neurological problems, as well as associated emotional, social and psychological issues.

Seizure symptoms may include:

  • Auras: Changes in taste, vision or hearing often signal an oncoming seizure
  • Loss of consciousness or awareness
  • Staring into the distance
  • Confusion
  • Jerking, twitching or other involuntary movements
  • Stiffening of the body

At Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital, we provide comprehensive, coordinated epilepsy care tailored to each individual patient, with education and support as key elements in each care plan.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a specialized inpatient unit located inside Orlando Health – Health Central. Designed to provide care for patients with epilepsy and seizure disorders, our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is a valuable diagnostic resource for patients as well as our team of epilepsy specialists.

While in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, a patient’s brain activity is monitored through the use of an electroencephalogram (EEG). Performed by a registered technician, an EEG is a painless test in which small sensors are attached to the patient’s scalp to record brain activity.

By being able to observe what happens in the brain before, during and after a seizure, this procedure helps us determine the type of epilepsy, as well as what may be triggering seizures. This allows the team to develop the most effective, individualized treatment plan as efficiently as possible.
