PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency - Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital
The ASHP-accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency program at Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital (OHDPH) is a one-year post-graduate training program availability for one (1) resident. We are excited about what our residency program has to offer and seek a resident who is committed to take this next step in their career. The residency will prepare the resident to become a confident clinician for contemporary pharmacy practice. The resident activities will include active participation in multidisciplinary teams with established clinical pharmacy services and longitudinal activities.
Graduates of the OHDPH PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency program will have developed skills for continued professional growth and personal assessment and become independent clinicians.
All of the required clinical rotations will be conducted at Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital (OHDPH). Elective rotations may be conducted at OHDPH, Orlando Health Cancer Institute (OHCI) or Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children (OHAPH).
PGY-1 Program Purpose
PGY-1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY-2) pharmacy residency training.
Goals of the Residency
- Assure safe, effective, appropriate drug therapy and prevent, identify, and resolve drug related problems.
- Present as a competent, confident, and compassionate practitioner and set and reassess goals.
- Demonstrate a commitment to the advancement of the profession and continued personal growth.
- Possess comprehensive health-system pharmacy skills that promote future professional growth.
- Create, promote, and participate as a part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Demonstrate the ability to identify opportunities for improvement within a practice and practice site.
- Provide education to professional and non-professional audiences, utilizing effective communication skills.
- Demonstrate a foundation of leadership skills in pharmacy practice.

Additional Longitudinal Activities

Residency Project (clinical, economic, research, or administrative)
- Design and conduct a project to develop or enhance an aspect of pharmacy operations or patient care.
- Present results at the Florida Residency Conference.
- Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication.

Medication Use Evaluation (MUE)
- Design and conduct a project evaluating part of the medication use process within Orlando Health and identify areas for improvement in patient care.
- Present results to the OH Medication Use Subcommittee and the Pharmacotherapy Committee.

Pharmacy Grand Rounds Seminar
- Present a 1-hour ACPE-accredited CE presentation.

Pharmacy Grand Rounds Case-Presentation
- Present a 1-hour ACPE-accredited CE patient-case based topic review.
- Journal Clubs
- Code Blue coverage (residents will receive ACLS training during Orientation)

Orlando Health Pharmacy Residency Basics

Employment as a pharmacy resident at Orlando Health is contingent upon the following:
- Obtaining a Florida Pharmacist license within 90 days from the start of the residency year
- Florida Board of Pharmacy Website: www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/pharmacy/ph_home.html
- Completion of the Orlando Health pre-employment physical
- A negative drug test including cotinine (metabolite of nicotine)
- The residency program is conducted in conjunction with Graduate Medical Education
- PharmAcademic is used to direct learning
- A residency advisor is selected to mentor the resident throughout the year.
- Advisors are also selected to assist the resident with completion of their seminar, case presentation, research project, MUE, leadership position requirements, wellness program assignments, and other projects (See Additional Longitudinal Activities above).
