Visiting the NICU

At Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies, we’re committed to taking the best possible care of your baby – and you. Our policies help ensure your baby has the ideal environment in which to heal and grow. You can lean on us, taking comfort in the fact that your child’s care and recovery are the focus of everyone in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Visiting Hours and Guidelines

  • Parents may visit the NICU around the clock — 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • All visitors must be 18 years or older.

Sanitation

To help protect your baby, please:

  • Remove all hand and wrist jewelry before entering the NICU. We provide bags for your jewelry at the NICU reception desk.
  • Wash your hands just before your visit and use an alcohol-based sanitizer frequently throughout.
  • Make sure all staff who enter your baby’s room wash or foam their hands prior to interacting with your baby. When in doubt, it’s OK to ask the staff again — they are just as committed to your child’s care as you are.

Cell Phones

Your cell phone is allowed in the NICU. We offer the CleanSlate UV Sanitizer to quickly sanitize your devices, making them germ- and bacteria-free in 30 seconds.

Free wireless internet access is available throughout Orlando Health Winnie Palmer by using the following login information:

Hospital Cafe

Our cafeteria, located on the 1st floor to the right of the main lobby entrance, is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We offer made-to-order items; a wrap station featuring Greek, Jamaican and Southern flavors; a grill offering hamburgers, chicken sandwiches and other American fare; and a self-service deli/salad/dessert bar. We also have a Grab-and-Go area where prepackaged salads, sandwiches and desserts are available.

Resources for Parents

Groups and Classes

We offer a range of classes and events for families, including:

  • Our Neonatal Parent Support Group welcomes parents and family who currently have an infant in the NICU. Discussions focus on topics relevant to the sick newborn.
  • We also offer one-hour breastfeeding classes taught by a pediatric physician. Classes include a teaching portion and Q&A.
  • Special Occasion Events are organized by the NICU Parent Advisory Council (PAC), to allow families of babies in the NICU to enjoy during their hospital stay. Watch for announcements at the reception desk, or call (321) 841-1568 for more information.

Sibling Support

We recognize that this can be a trying time for siblings. Our child life specialists are available to work with siblings at any time during your baby’s stay. The process includes therapeutic expression to work through and release any emotions your child may have throughout this time.

Music Therapy

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals. Our board-certified and master’s-prepared music therapists will provide your infant with appropriate sensory stimulation to help them grow and develop, as well as create a soothing environment to help your infant relax. Ask your nurse or physician if your infant qualifies for music therapy services.

Concierge Services

Should you have any non-medical needs during your baby’s stay, please ask our concierge team to assist. They are dedicated to providing additional services, including arranging massages or the delivery of a gourmet celebratory meal.

Food Services

Meal Trays

Guest food trays are available for parents of babies in the NICU by calling room service at (321) 843-3663 from 7:00 am to 10:00 pm. The meal charges are discounted from regular cafeteria rates: Trays cost $4 for breakfast and $5 for either lunch or dinner. Lunch and dinner trays include one entree, three sides, a drink and dessert.

A dining menu is available with the receptionist.

If assistance is needed for meals, please contact Patient and Family Counseling at (321) 843-3800, Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

On-Campus Food Options

Cafeteria at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer

The cafeteria is located on the first floor to the right of the main lobby. The cafeteria options include freshly prepared culinary selections, wraps, grill items, smoothies, prepackaged options and self-service deli/salad/dessert bar. The cafeteria at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Cafeteria at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer

The cafeteria is located on the first floor past the castle and the atrium, on the right. The cafeteria offers a variety of fresh, prepackaged foods, snacks and drinks. Salad bar and hot bar items also are available.

 

The cafeteria at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 2:00 pm, and is closed Saturday and Sunday.

Miller Street Café

Located inside the Miller Street valet entrance of Orlando Health Arnold Palmer by the Emergency Department, Miller Street Café offers freshly brewed Starbucks coffee, an assortment of hot teas, specialty drinks, juice and water. Fresh bagels, pastries, sandwiches, fruit and yogurt parfaits also are available.

 

The Miller Street Café is open Monday through Friday, 6:30 am to 8:00 pm and from 6:30 am to 1:00 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Off-Campus Dining

Delivery from eight off-site restaurants, including pizza, Chinese and deli sandwiches, is available. Please see the NICU Parent Resource Guide for a full list. When ordering, please be sure to give your name and phone number, along with the hospital’s address at 83 W. Miller St., Orlando, FL 32806.

 

The NICU Parent Resource Guide also contains a list of about 20 restaurants located within a mile of the hospital. Dining options include Mexican, bagels, burgers, diner fare and fast food.

Language Services

We offer a variety of interpreter services, including foreign language and American Sign Language interpreters for our guests. Please ask your care provider for an interpreter when you arrive. Interpreter services are available free of charge, 24 hours a day.

Spiritual Care

The Spiritual Care Department is here for you and your family 24 hours a day to offer support in the form of prayer, scripture, rituals or simply a listening ear. They also can assist you in contacting your own clergy, or if you prefer, they will serve you until you are able to return home. Your nurse can contact the Spiritual Care team for you or you may call directly at (321) 843-3222.

The chapel is located on the second floor near the connecting bridge and is always open.

Customer Service Specialists

Our Customer Service Specialist team provides assistance from a nonclinical perspective, providing amenities to make your stay at the hospital as comfortable as possible.
