Protocol Abbrev: Celiac Cytokines
Principal Investigator: Vijay Mehta, DO
Age Group: Pediatric

Objective
To assess that IL-15 and IL-8 is elevated, while IL-4 is decreased in biopsy homogenate, brushing samples and the serum of patients with celiac disease compared to patients that do not have celiac disease.
Correlate the results with the degree of mucosal damage as originally classified by Marsh et al. and modified by Oberhauer. If the blood levels of the cytokines correlates with those detected in the mucosal biopsies and brushing then they would provide a more reliable assessment of mucosal healing. -
Key Eligibility
Children (age 1-18 years) undergoing endoscopy with the suspicion of celiac disease and controls whose caregiver will sign the consent form.
