After a patient overcomes a severe infection or injury, they can be left with different length limbs, legs specifically, and will need limb lengthening surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and there is not much pain because the recurring bone separation is so gradual. After surgery, the bone that has been cut is gradually pulled apart using an external fixation device, allowing the bone to regrow and fill in the gap. This procedure can cause each bone to grow from 15-100% of its original length and can be performed on adults and children.
