A Day in the Life of an ER Nurse
As an emergency room nurse at Orlando Health I get to make a difference in a patient’s life at a time when they are most in need of care. I'd even say it's one of the rare nursing specialties where you can physically see the difference you've made for a patient almost immediately. Whether it's something simple, such as helping a patient relieve the pain of a migraine, or something major, such as helping deliver a child or resuscitating a patient who came in without a pulse, you see the impact right away.

The Decline of Salt? A Look at America’s Eating Habits.
Since the late 1970s, scientists have known that the consumption of too much salt, containing sodium, is linked to hypertension, or high blood pressure. Table salt is a combination of two minerals, sodium and chloride. By weight, table salt is approximately 40% sodium and 60% chloride. In 1977, the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs recommended that Americans cut their sodium intake by between 60 and 85%. Forty years later, even though the Mayo Clinic recommends limiting sodium to 2,300 milligrams (mg) per day, Americans exceed this on average and consume about 3,400mg of sodium every day. Your doctor or dietitian can tell you the specific limit that is right for you.

Melinda and Paxton’s Journey to Becoming a Pet Therapy Team
My journey to becoming a Pet Therapy Team started after I began volunteering at Orlando Health. I decided to donate my time to the organization because it was close to home, and I had family members who had been patients at Orlando Regional Medical Center. I knew that one day I would want to work at Orlando Health so I thought volunteering would give me a better idea of what the organization is like.

A Day in The Life of an Air Care EMT
It’s only natural that I would end up choosing a career as an EMT, especially considering my dad was a firefighter. I guess it runs in the family. I can honestly say, though, that there is nothing else I’d rather do than what I get to do every day as an EMT for the Orlando Health Air Care Team and the Orlando Fire Department. Like most people who work at Orlando Health, a big part of what I love about my job is helping patients heal. In my case though, I also thrive on the “emergency” part of it. Being the first to arrive on scene when someone’s been hurt or suddenly gotten sick, you have to think fast and act fast. And to do that, you have to remain calm when the stress level is at its highest. Throughout the course of my career, I’m grateful that I’ve been able to do this consistently.

Common Running Injuries and How To Prevent Them
Living in Central Florida is great for runners. The weather is nice, the terrain is flat and there are many beautiful parks and neighborhoods to explore. However, that being said, running on a regular basis year-round can have its drawbacks. Much of what I see in my practice is secondary to overuse and poor running technique. Even for runners, cross training and taking time off is important for preventing injuries. Equally important is a pair of good running shoes that are replaced on a regular basis.

BRCA gene mutation and cancer: You have options, despite heredity

First patient at Orlando Health undergoes transcatheter aortic valve replacement
Catheter used during transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure. The transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure is designed for high-risk patients living with severe chest pain, congestive heart failure or symptoms of aortic stenosis — an age-related heart disease that develops when calcium deposits cause the aortic valve to narrow, forcing the heart to work harder to pump enough blood through a smaller opening.

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) at Orlando Health
Doctors at the Orlando Health Heart & Vascular Institute are taking a new route to a patient’s heart valve and giving new hope to patients once considered "too sick" for surgery. Our cardiologists recently began using the first artificial heart valve approved by the FDA, to replace a narrowed heart valve by going through an artery in the patient’s leg instead of a traditional open heart surgery.
