Overview
Cervical cancer is a slow growing disease and begins as abnormal cells (dysplastic) growing in the lining of the cervix. Detectable by a routine Pap test at the precancerous (or dyspastic stage), it should be treated before it can affect fertility and spread to other tissues and organs.
The cause of cervical cancer is almost always due to an infection of the cervix by human papilloma virus (HPV). It is important to know that not all women who have HPV infections will develop cervix cancer. Those women who do not get screening tests such as the PAP test and HPV test as suggested by medical professionals are at the highest risk of developing cervix cancer. A vast majority of cervix cancer can be detected in the pre-cancerous stage and prevented with Pap tests and HPV vaccination.

Our gynecologic oncology team will diagnose and determine the extent of your cancer with a Pap test and colposcopy, a procedure to examine your cervix. We may recommend an ultrasound, X-rays, MRI, cone biopsy, HPV DNA test, and PET or CT scans. Our surgeons may perform video-assisted laparoscopic or robotic surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System, and follow-up chemotherapy or radiation may be required.
