Orlando Health is first in Florida to use device that repositions patients up to 750 pounds in hospital bed

New technology benefits patients and clinical teams

Orlando, FL (September 23, 2024) Orlando Health is the first healthcare system in Florida to use the Hercules Patient Repositioning system, an automated device able to reposition patients in a hospital bed. The system, which can accommodate patients who weigh up to 750 pounds, increases the comfort of patients, optimizes the safety of clinical team members and streamlines clinical workflows.

Orlando Health launched a pilot program with the device at Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center and Orlando Health South Lake Hospital. The device will be installed this fall in Progressive Care Units throughout the rest of the system’s Florida hospitals.

“This initiative underscores Orlando Health’s dedication to serving our patients and to being a best place to work by equipping our clinical team members with the tools they need to deliver exceptional care while also prioritizing their well-being,” said Darius Love, AVP of Workforce Optimization & Redesign at Orlando Health. “We are grateful to be at the forefront of using this advanced technology, that simplifies an important healthcare task, for the benefit of patients and team members.”

The state-of-the-art device is attached to a bedframe. It pulls up a patient lying down on a special sheet in 10 seconds or less with a simple click of a button.

Repositioning a patient in bed helps maintain a healthy blood flow and alleviates pressure on injury-prone areas of the body.

The device removes the need for multiple clinical team members to lift and redistribute a patient’s weight in bed, preventing the physical strain on caregivers and improving clinicial workflows.

Orlando Health plans to continue evaluation of the device’s possible uses in other inpatient medical units within the system.
