Orlando Health Network saves nearly $90 million in healthcare costs

The clinically integrated network is now the region’s largest and highest performing

Orlando, FL January 18, 2019 – With more than 200,000 managed lives, representing more than $1.1 billion in annual healthcare expenditures, the Orlando Health Network – the largest clinically integrated network in the region – has saved $89.9 million in healthcare costs in just five years according to the Network’s 2018 Value Report, which was released today.

The Orlando Health Network, part of Orlando Health, Inc. health system, is the umbrella organization which consists of employed and community care providers along with inpatient and outpatient care facilities. The Orlando Health Network value-based program launched in 2013 and represented the first hospital-sponsored Medicare Shared Savings Program Accountable Care Organization (ACO) in the state of Florida. Since then, the Network has developed value-based partnerships with commercial payers including Cigna, Florida Blue, United Healthcare and Aetna. Additionally, improvements with immunization rates, diabetes management, depression management, high blood pressure, depression, and cancer screenings have occurred. The Network also participated in the voluntary Bundled Payments for Care Improvement initiative administered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and introduced several population health programs to positively impact rates of inpatient readmissions, post-acute care utilization, surgical site infections and complications.

“It is our network of more than 2,500 employed and independent physicians and more than 1,500 advanced care providers that make the Network so incredibly successful,” said John Cappleman, MD, board chairman, Orlando Health Network. “Each and every one of us is committed to achieving the Triple Aim of healthcare, which is to reduce costs, enhance the patient experience and improve quality.”

Since the launch of its first ACO in 2013, the Orlando Health Network has consistently achieved high-quality scores each year, including 98.4 percent in 2016 with the Medicare Shared Savings Program.

“Due to the close collaboration provided by the Orlando Health Network, patient care is coordinated across specialties, services, and facilities. As a result, we hope to see patients paying less in out-of-pocket expenses and avoiding unnecessary visits to the emergency room, which is the most expensive level of care,” added Dr. Cappleman.
