Since 1999, more than 13,400 local children have learned Safe Start techniques, which teach those as young as six months to hold their breath under water, turn onto their backs and float unassisted if they accidentally fall into water.

Drowning is the No. 1 killer of children under age five in Florida, and experts believe the best way to connect parents with Safe Start is through their pediatricians.

Included in the Arnold Palmer Hospital Safe Start kits are patient brochures, a DVD of the co-branded video, posters for exam rooms and banners for larger practices. The goal is to discuss with parents the benefits of enrolling in the Safe Start drowning prevention program during infant and toddler well visits.
