South Lake Hospital receives Community Benefit Achievement Award

CLERMONT, Fla. — South Lake Hospital received the 2012 Community Benefit Achievement Award from the Florida Hospital Association (FHA) Thursday evening at the Annual FHA Celebration of Achievement in Quality and Service Awards in Orlando.

The Community Benefit Achievement Award is given to one large (over 150 beds) and one small (under 150 beds) each year and goes to a hospital that has distinguished itself through efforts to improve the health and wellbeing of their communities demonstrated by a project, program or initiative. South Lake Hospital was recognized for its commitment to wellness through sports, fitness and education, which is incorporated into all aspects of its campus.

“We are honored to receive this recognition,” commented South Lake Hospital President John Moore, who accepted the award on behalf of the hospital. “Every program and service South Lake Hospital provides is created by focusing on the healthcare needs of our community and we have been fortunate to be able to become a leader in providing quality preventative healthcare.”

The National Training Center wellness facility provides programming for youth and teens focusing on healthy lifestyle habits. They range from fitness classes to recreational classes to competitive sports teams. The hospital provides scholarships for underserved youth in its community so that all of the South Lake residents have access to physical fitness. The hospital recognizes the importance of supporting community partners and provides free memberships to the local fire department on an ongoing basis.

South Lake Hospital also offers education classes for adults in the community on several topics such as smoking cessation and diabetes and works with the NTC to ensure that proper exercise is a competent of the participants’ experience, offering free access to the wellness center during the courses. To complement the NTC, the hospital campus also includes an organic community garden, a permanent outdoor labyrinth, a therapeutic garden and a walking trail.
