Training Locations
Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies is an 11-story, 350-bed hospital that specializes in high-risk births, using every means available to ensure the safety and comfort of mother and baby. The state-of-the-art technology and personal care provided in our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) offer premature babies a chance at life. In fact, our NICU has one of the highest survival rates in the country for low birthweight babies, and was once again ranked by U.S. News & World Report as a Top Hospital for Neonatology 2023-2024. Our Level IV NICU has 142 beds to support a delivery population of more than 14,000 babies per year.

Christa Matrone, MD, EdM, FAAP
Dr. Matrone is board certified in pediatrics and in neonatal-perinatal medicine and serves as the associate program director for the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women & Babies. Dr. Matrone is passionate about medical education and strives to create a transformative learning experience in our fellowship program with a focus on autonomy and strong mentoring relationships. In addition to her role in the fellowship, Dr. Matrone is the director of therapeutic hypothermia for the Orlando Health Winnie Palmer NICU, serves on the hospital-wide Ethics Committee, and is on the Complex Care Team, providing care to infants with complicated and chronic medical needs. Her research in medical education focuses on interprofessional training, simulation-based education and effective feedback.

Douglas E. Hardy, MD
Dr. Hardy is board certified in pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and has been a practicing neonatologist at Orlando Health since 1987. He is the medical director for quality for the NICU at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer and the clinical director of the Level IV NICU. He is also one of the physician directors for the Complex Care Unit, an area of the NICU developed to care for complicated, technology-dependent babies.
