2019 Major League Soccer Medical Symposium

Thank you for attending the Inaugural Orlando Health Sports Medicine Symposium this past June. We are excited to announce that we are partnering with Major League Soccer to put on the 2019 Major League Soccer Medical Symposium, which will function as our second Orlando Health Sports Medicine Symposium, on January 5, 2019. Collegiate and professional soccer leagues rely upon their medical teams to treat soccer related injuries and return injured players to the sport in a safe and efficient manner. This activity will provide medical teams with guidance on the identification, prevention, and treatment of injuries and illness common to the soccer athlete. The team approach will be emphasized using case presentations, injury updates of current recommendations, and methods for return to sport in common areas affecting the soccer population. Emphasis will be placed on acknowledging the rare, but life threatening catastrophic injuries and illness that can be encountered in contact sports.

The symposium will be ideal for MLS team physicians, sports medicine physicians, internal and family medicine physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapist, occupational therapists, strength and conditioning professionals, sports scientists, massage therapists and other advanced practice providers.

Target Audience

The symposium will be ideal for MLS team physicians, sports medicine physicians, internal and family medicine physicians, athletic trainers, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other allied advanced practice providers.

Objectives

  • The participants will recognize the unique role of all team members involved in the care of soccer athletes and better communicate and coordinate care from prevention, recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, and ultimately return to sport.

  • Participants will gain knowledge and identify cardiac guidelines emerging in screening and prevention of cardiac illnesses in athletes. Participants will also recognize new strategies using ultrasound to evaluate and treat soft tissue injuries in soccer athletes, gain knowledge of medical illness that can affect players when traveling and describe treatment of these illness and plan appropriate materials and supplies needed for travel care.

  • Participants will describe pathways and mechanisms such as PRP, mesenchymal stemcells, and the use of different biological substrates. They will also identify evidence based indications for orthobiologics and be able to determine when they should be used. They will also consider ethical and legal ramifications of emerging treatments.

  • Participants will describe and implement MLS and US Soccer recommendations and protocols in place for athlete safety in the recognition, diagnosis, and treatment of concussions. Additionally, they will gain knowledge of these recommendations in the adolescent population, and integrate return to play techniques using the most current evidence based recommendations.
  • Participants will identify evidence based recommendations for the evaluation treatment, treatment order, and rehabilitation of hip and athletic pubalgia injuries in soccer athletes. Rehabilitation knowledge and considerations will be identified and discussed in strategies for youth players as well.
