Peyronie’s Disease

Peyronie’s disease is characterized by a curvature in the penis. The bend may be up, down or sideways, depending on the location of scar tissue, or plaque, that causes the curvature. About one in every 100 adult men is diagnosed with Peyronie’s, though the number may be higher because embarrassment over the condition may prevent some men from seeking care.

Peyronie’s disease often is the result of trauma to the penis that disrupts the inner lining of the penis and its blood flow, which leads plaque formation. The trauma may result from vigorous sex or some type of injury. Scientists also suspect a genetic component might be responsible for the condition. Men with autoimmune diseases like lupus also are at higher risk. Peyronie’s can be painful for men when they have an erection or during sex. In some cases, it makes intercourse impossible. The disease is non-cancerous and does not cause infertility (unless erections are affected by the curvature limiting sexual function.
