Dr. Avery Buchholz is a board-certified neurosurgeon with the Orlando Health Spine Center, a multidisciplinary collaboration between Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute and Orlando Health Neuroscience Institute. He specializes in complex deformities of the spine, and his expertise includes:

  • Spinal deformity
  • Scoliosis
  • Spine trauma
  • Spine oncology
  • Cervical, lumbar and thoracic spine
  • Complex spine surgery
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Back pain
  • Neurosurgery

Before joining Orlando Health, Dr. Buchholz worked in private practices in Richmond, Virginia, and Winter Park. He serves as a National Spine Health Foundation medical and scientific board member.

Dr. Buchholz treats patients like family and helps them make informed decisions about their medical care.

Dr. Buchholz’s Training

Dr. Buchholz earned a bachelor’s degree in biology at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina in Charleston. He received his medical degree and a master’s degree in public health (MPH) with a concentration in injury prevention from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Dr. Buchholz completed a neurological surgery residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, where he served as chief resident in his final year. He also completed a complex spine fellowship and was an AO Spine fellow at the University of Virginia. Through all this, Dr. Buchholz served as an officer in the Army National Guard and retired after 12 years of service. 

About Dr. Buchholz

Dr. Buchholz is board certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. His professional memberships include AO Spine North America, Scoliosis Research Society, North American Spine Society, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons and Society for Minimally Invasive Surgeons.

He worked in academics as a faculty member at the University of Virginia neurosurgery department and later worked in private practice before joining Orlando Health. Dr. Buchholz serves as a National Spine Health Foundation medical and scientific board member and sits on committees for numerous spine societies. He is still actively involved in education as a faculty member with the AO Spine Society, where he teaches residents and practicing surgeons advanced spine techniques.

Dr. Buchholz’s work has been published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and he has presented his work internationally. He has served as a reviewer for The Spine Journal, Global Spine Journal and World Neurosurgery and has written numerous book chapters. Dr. Buchholz has a special interest in adult deformity surgery and outcomes, spine surgery outcomes, workflow and efficiency.

Outside of work, Dr. Buchholz enjoys golf, hunting, fishing, working out and tinkering with his classic cars.
